Clinical research has shown to have some interesting results on treating hepatitis B (liver fibrosis) patients with capsules of Cordyceps sinensis medicinal mushroom (also called Xinganbao).
Xinganbao is used in China, and the mushroom has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as well as modern medicine for treating a number of ailments and issues. The scientific name, Cordyceps sinensis, is known in North America and the fungus is typically utilized by athletes for improving performance, increasing blood oxygen, and lengthening endurance during exercise. These qualities, along with enhancing the immune system, may be why it was chosen to help with liver issues, since the liver is the purifier and filter for the blood.
Study on Cordyceps and hepatitis B
A study by XB Wang, YY Jiang, and CY Zhao of the Department of Integrative Medicine at Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, in Beijing was done to explore whether Cordyceps sinensis (Xinganbao) capsules would have any effects on liver fibrosis/chronic hepatitis B.
The study included 60 patients who had chronic hepatitis B, and were randomly assigned to two groups (trial group – 40 cases, and the control group – 20 cases). The trial group was treated with 8 capsules of Cordyceps sinensis, 3x/day. The control group, however, was given tablets of Heluo Shugan (5 pills each time, 3x/day).
One course of the therapy lasted six months and “liver function, four indicators of serum fibrosis, liver histology, and other items were detected.” There were statistical differences that resulted from the Cordyceps sinensis group compared to the before treatment.
Results of the study concluded that 53% of the cases in the trial group completed the biopsy of the liver twice, and after being treated with Cordyceps sinensis, 81% had “decreased liver inflammation 1 grade or more, 52% patients … had decreased fibrosis staging one or more, and 33% … patients had no change in fibrosis.”
Overall, the scientists learned that capsules of Cordyceps sinensis “could improve the liver function, reduce liver inflammation, and fight against hepatic fibrosis” so that is good news for people with hepatitis B or chronic liver issues.
Other common medicinal mushrooms that support the liver, besides Cordyceps sinensis include Coriolus versicolor (Trametes versicolor), Mesima (Phellinus linteus), Reishi mushroom, fruiting bodies, and spores (Ganoderma lucidum), Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and Poria Cocos (Poria cocos).
