Cordyceps sinensis medicinal mushrooms may boost testosterone levels and improve athletes’ performance.
Cordyceps is a Chinese fungus that grows on ants and caterpillars! Even though these are quite the rare delicacy in China, which is a breach to the pocketbook if you buy them, there is no need to be eating caterpillars or ants in order to consume or take advantage of the health benefits that cordyceps provides! These days, the cordyceps medicinal mushroom is grown in rice cultures, and can be purchased as a supplement as well. Athletes and those with testosterone level problems can particularly benefit from cordyceps medicinal mushrooms.
Cordyceps medicinal mushroom boosts athletes’ oxygen levels
The cordyceps edible fungus is of exceptional benefit to both athletes and non-athletes, not only for their antioxidant properties, but for raising their V02 Max levels (volume of oxygen you consume while exercising at maximum capacity). A double blind study was done with 30 volunteers using cordyceps sinesis herbal extract and placebo controls. The results showed increased cellular oxygen was absorbed with significant improvement. Different studies also showed absorption of the cellular oxygen was increased up to 40% and also augments heart function. Between the two, athletes’ aerobic activities and performance increases, with easier breathing during the process. During workouts cordyceps can also be coupled with creatine for a boost in lifting weights.
Cordyceps elevates testosterone levels
Testosterone may also be increased by cordyceps mushrooms. In vitro studies have exampled this effect (also seen in mice in vivo) where cordyceps improved plasma testosterone levels by 170% when their production was previously low. Hypotheses include that the testosterone increase is due to the LH receptors having a similar structure to cordyceps’ glycoproteins and/or polysaccharides to the point that it may be stimulating the body to produce testosterone.
The bottom line is that more research needs to be done regarding testosterone increases and aerobic and performance improvements for athletes, but that cordyceps medicinal mushrooms has some serious supporting information regarding all of this for athletes has now reached an acute place in science and the market. Don’t forget that cordyceps mushrooms are not only found in numerous immune boosting and products designed specifically for athletes, but also can be purchased as supplements in specialty supplement stores. As always please consult with your doctor before using any new product.
