Researchers Ying Liu, et al, conducted both animal and human studies on the effects of Agaricus Blazei Murill, a medicinal mushroom.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and recently in Japan, many people are either abandoning traditional western medicine, or complementing it with natural health foods, including medicinal mushrooms.

Popular medicinal mushrooms include Reishi – also known as Ganoderma Lucidum – as well as Cordyceps and Agaricus Blazei Murill, or ABM mushroom.  The latter has been known to improve symptoms of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes and boost the human immune system to fight inflammation and cancer.

In a human study, percentage of body fat, percentage of visceral fat, cholesterol and blood glucose levels were decreased, and natural killer cell activity was increased.  The study suggests that Agaricus Blazei Murill is useful as a health-promoting food.

In the United States and Canada, Agaricus Blazei Murill mushroom is available both as mushroom extract and as capsules.  The active ingredient responsible for many of the medicinal mushroom’s health benefit is believed to be beta glucan, which is available as a dietary supplement as well.  However, in nature, sometimes various natural compounds work synergistically.  Therefore, it would be logical to assume that beta glucan itself would not produce exactly the same results as the medicinal mushrooms it is derived from.
